Professional Experience

Taught senior-level course “Globalization and Economic Policy” as adjunct faculty.

2003-               retired

IMF Senior Resident Representative in Madagascar.  Advised the President, Ministers of Finance and Economy, Governor of the Central Bank and other senior officials on economic and financial policies, and monitored performance in the framework of programs agreed with the IMF.  Liaised closely with other representatives of the international community.  Member of the diplomatic corps.

Advisor, IMF Institute.  Responsible for in-house program of training in economics for IMF staff.  Liaised with regional training institutes in Africa for training of country officials in macroeconomics and financial programming.  Performed various administrative functions of the front office of the IMF Institute.  Led teams of instructors offering national or regional courses for officials of IMF member countries in different areas of the world.

Deputy Division Chief, North African Division, African Department.

Senior Economist, African Department.  (Promoted from Economist in 1988.) Desk officer for Algeria from January 1989, for Nigeria during 1988, and for Equatorial Guinea 1986-87.  Responsible for analysis of economic developments and prospects in desk country, coordinating a team of several econo­mists.  Participated in negotiations for IMF-supported adjustment programs.

Member (Chairman 1987-88) of committee of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the United States charged with guiding the internal development of the Bahá’í community.

Member of the International Board of Directors, Anis Zunúzí Bahá’í School, Port-au-Prince, Haïti, a non-profit, charita­ble primary school providing low-cost education to village children.

1986-1992       Organizer, IMF staff discussion group (“The Wednesday Group”) devoted to exploring moral and ethical aspects of IMF work, such as environmental and poverty issues and the economic impact of defense spending.
