We were still in Bulgaria in early January, but then returned to our home in Hluboká nad Vltavou, Czech Republic.

In early March, Greg and Emi visited Bratislava for Bahá’í meetings just before the borders were closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Mina was able to travel to the Czech Republic from her college in upstate New York just in time before more borders were closed, and she continued her studies online from our home in Hluboká. We were happy to have her with us!

Emi flew to Bulgaria on 1 May to be with her mother who was having a series of complications from her fall and surgery in October. In the U.S., Gregory’s twin granddaughters Cami and Mica were graduating from high school in California and his grandson Gabe was graduating from middle school in Chicago. At the end of May, Greg and Mina joined Emi in Bulgaria and were there with Baba for the summer.

On 8 August, Gregory and Merle Birn, his German friend from high school, were married in Denmark. We all managed to get there despite pandemic border restrictions, and after a flurry of activity to arrange everything, all went well. We had rented a large farm house in the middle of wheat fields to accommodate both families. The civil wedding ceremony took place on the picturesque island of Fanø on the West coast of Denmark, followed by a celebratory lunch in a traditional restaurant there, and then the Bahá’í ceremony and dinner in our rented farmhouse.

On our return to Bulgaria, Emi, Greg, Joyce and Mina spent a few days at our vacation apartment in Vlas on the Black Sea Coast. On our return to Krupnik, we were joined by Gregory, Merle and Joyce’s boyfriend Taylor, we celebrated Emi’s birthday at home and had a luncheon celebration of Merle and Gregory’s wedding at the Rila Monastery. There is always work to be done in the village, such as caring for the bees.

In September-November, Emi and Greg were back in our home in the Czech Republic. We spent a wonderful three nights visiting friends in Tyrol in the Austrian Alps at the end of September. In Hluboká, the fall colors were wonderful.

In December, we were all together in the village in Bulgaria with Baba.
